About H.V. Bowen & Sons

A Century of Service to Mid Wales

Since 1907, H.V. Bowen & Sons has been an integral part of the Mid Wales community, evolving from humble beginnings into a comprehensive supplier of agricultural, fuel, and quarry products while maintaining our commitment to quality, service, and family values.

Our Story

The Early Years (1907-1930s)

H.V. Bowen & Sons was established in 1907 when founder Harry Vaughn Bowen began trading with 'Horse & Cart' throughout the local area. His entrepreneurial spirit led to the purchase of 'Dwyrhiew Mill' in New Mills, near Newtown in 1911, which became the foundation of our agriculture and fuel business. Harry and his wife Mary Jane raised four children here: John, Tom, Maurice, and Doris (Tanner), instilling in them the values of hard work and community service that continue to guide our company today.

Expansion & Growth (1930s-1990s)

The 1930s marked a significant milestone with Harry beginning work at 'Tan-y-Foel Quarry,' expanding our operations into aggregate production. The quarry was formally acquired in the 1940s, further strengthening our position in the industry. This period saw the business transition to the second generation as Harry's sons continued his legacy. Eventually, Tom Bowen and his wife Mary Catherine took the helm, raising their children Haydn and Delyth at the original Dwyrhiew Mill site while steadily growing the company's reputation and capabilities.

In the 1980s, the business diversified significantly with the establishment of our Ready Mixed Concrete plant at Tan-y-Foel Quarry. What began with a single mixer truck has grown into a fleet of five full-time mixer trucks. Under Haydn and his wife Gwyneth's leadership during this period, the company continued to expand its services and reach.

Modern Evolution (2000s-Present)

Now in its fifth generation of family ownership, H.V. Bowen & Sons is led by Mark and his wife Nia, alongside their sons Tom and Harry. The company has grown to employ over thirty people from the local area, serving customers throughout Newtown, Welshpool, Mid Wales, and into the Shropshire borders.

Our concrete production is now CQA registered and ISO 9002 compliant, manufactured using our own 20mm chippings and imported sand and cement. Our quarry operations have evolved from primarily producing building stone for roads and houses to offering crushed and screened stone in various sizes for applications ranging from sea and river anti-erosion projects to road construction, drainage solutions, and ornamental features.

Recent developments include our state-of-the-art ready mix concrete plant, expanded fleet of specialized delivery vehicles, and enhanced product offerings across all divisions.
